Capriccio may be defined as a whim or invention of the human mind. It probably derives from capro, or goat, prominently illustrated in one of della Bella’s plates, as goats were considered irrational creatures. Della Bella made several series of various capricci and he strongly influenced such later artists as Francisco Goya, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and Giambattista Piranesi.
